Why Won’t My EV Charger Disconnect? Stuck Connector Fixes

A stuck EV connector is usually locked by the car. How to release it safely with the car app, key or manual release, and why it locks.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

In most cases the car is deliberately locking the connector. Many EVs lock the charging connector while charging and while the car is locked, to prevent theft and to ensure power is off before the connector is removed. Unlocking the car, stopping the charge in the app or pressing the release button on the connector usually frees it. Ice and debris can also jam the latch.

How to Release It

  • Unlock the car with the key fob or app, then press the connector button.
  • Stop charging in the car’s screen or app, wait a few seconds, then remove.
  • Check the cable lock setting. Some cars have a “permanently lock cable” option.
  • Use the manual release. Most EVs have an emergency release cable near the charge port, often in the trunk or under the hood. See your manual.
  • In freezing weather, pre-condition the car or gently warm the port area; do not pull hard.

Why It Locks

Pulling a connector while current flows could cause arcing. The car and charger therefore lock the connector during charging and open the relay before release. Some cars keep it locked whenever the car is locked, so nobody can unplug it in a public car park.

When It Is a Hardware Problem

  • The latch on the connector is bent or broken.
  • Debris or corrosion in the port.
  • The car’s locking actuator fails.

Never force the connector with tools. If it still will not release, contact the car maker’s roadside assistance or the charger manufacturer. EVDANCE connectors, such as on the EVDANCE EV-ACS4005T 40A NACS portable charger, are designed for repeated daily use in all weather, but the car controls the lock.
