How Is an EV Charger Wired? A Plain-English Overview

How a Level 2 charger connects to your panel: breaker, conductors, ground, and why the work belongs to a licensed electrician.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

A Level 2 EV charger in North America is wired to a dedicated two-pole breaker in your electrical panel with two hot conductors (L1 and L2) and an equipment ground. Most chargers do not use a neutral. The breaker, wire and charger setting must match: breaker at 125% of charging current, wire rated for the breaker. This is an overview to help you understand quotes, not DIY instructions; the work usually needs a permit and a licensed electrician.

The Connection, Step by Step

  • Panel: a two-pole breaker (for example 50 A) feeds the circuit.
  • Conductors: two hots and a ground, sized for the breaker; a neutral only if the charger or receptacle needs it.
  • Route: cable or conduit to the charger location.
  • Termination: either a NEMA 14-50/6-50 receptacle or directly into the charger’s terminal block.
  • Configuration: the charger’s maximum current is set to match the breaker (DIP switches, app or dial).
  • Inspection and test.

Europe and the UK

Single-phase chargers connect to live, neutral and earth at 230 V; three-phase chargers use three lines, neutral and earth at 400 V. RCD protection and, in the UK, PEN fault protection apply. See UK supply cable and earthing.

Why It Is Not DIY

EV charging is a continuous load; wrong wire size, loose terminations or mismatched settings can overheat. See can I install a Level 2 charger myself.

The EVDANCE EV-ACT5006T 48A Level 2 wall charger can be hard-wired or used with a NEMA 14-50P plug; the EVDANCE EV-ACT3204E 22 kW wallbox is a hard-wired three-phase wallbox.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Level 2 charger use 3 or 4 wires?

What breaker type is used?

A two-pole breaker sized for the circuit; GFCI where required.

Can I wire a charger to a subpanel?

Yes, if the subpanel and its feeder have capacity.
