Is the Tesla Charger NACS? NACS, J3400 and Adapters Explained

Yes, Tesla’s connector is NACS, standardized by SAE as J3400. What that means for Tesla owners, other EV drivers and charger buyers.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

Yes. The connector on Tesla chargers in North America is the North American Charging Standard, or NACS. Tesla developed it and opened the design in 2022, and SAE International standardized it as SAE J3400. Since then, many automakers have announced or begun selling models with NACS ports, and charger makers sell NACS versions of home and public chargers.

What It Means for You

  • Tesla owners: nothing changes; your charger and car already use NACS.
  • Owners of new NACS-port cars from other brands: you can use NACS chargers natively and J1772 chargers with an adapter.
  • Owners of J1772/CCS1 cars: you can use NACS chargers with approved adapters; see can I use a Tesla charger for other cars.
  • Charger buyers: match your current car and keep an adapter for the other standard.
