Can I Use a Level 2 Charger With a 110V Outlet?

A Level 2 charger needs 208–240 V. On a 110–120 V outlet it either will not work or works only as a Level 1 charger. Here is why and what to do.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

Not as Level 2. Level 2 charging by definition uses 208–240 V. A dedicated Level 2 wall charger will not run on a 110–120 V outlet. Some portable chargers are dual-voltage and come with interchangeable plugs; on a 120 V outlet they work, but only at Level 1 speed of about 3–5 miles per hour.

Why Voltage Matters

Power is voltage times current. At 120 V and 12 A you get 1.44 kW. At 240 V and 32 A you get 7.7 kW. A 120 V household circuit cannot safely deliver enough current to reach Level 2 power, and a Level 2 charger’s plug will not fit a 120 V outlet.

Options if You Only Have 120 V

  • Use Level 1 on a dedicated outlet if it covers your daily miles; see can I charge from a normal socket.
  • Add a 240 V circuit. Most homes in North America have 240 V at the panel, so an electrician can run a new circuit to the garage.
  • Use an existing 240 V outlet, such as a dryer or welder outlet, with a suitable charger and current setting.
  • Avoid “voltage booster” or outlet-combining devices unless they are listed for the purpose and installed by an electrician.

Is there a 110 V Level 2 charger?

No. Level 2 is defined by 208–240 V.

Do most houses have 240 V?

Most North American homes have 240 V service at the panel, used by dryers and ranges.
