EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

EV chargers are made by several kinds of companies: dedicated charger manufacturers, large electrical equipment makers, automakers, charging network operators and contract factories that build products for other brands. The name on a charger is not always the company that built it. Many chargers are designed and assembled by a manufacturer and sold under a different brand through OEM or private-label agreements.

The Main Types of EV Charger Makers

Type of companyWhat it typically doesWho it sells to
Dedicated charger manufacturersDesign and build chargers in their own factoriesDistributors, installers, brands, sometimes consumers
Electrical equipment companiesAdd chargers to a wider range of panels, breakers and switchgearElectricians, contractors, commercial projects
AutomakersOffer branded home chargers, often built by a manufacturing partnerTheir own car buyers
Charging network operatorsRun public stations; some develop their own hardware, others buy itDrivers (service), site hosts
OEM / ODM factoriesBuild chargers to another company’s design or offer their own designs for rebrandingBrands, importers, retailers

Why the Brand and the Maker Are Often Different

Building a charger requires electronics design, safety testing, tooling and a production line. Many brands find it faster to work with an experienced factory. Under an OEM arrangement, the factory builds to the brand’s specification. Under an ODM arrangement, the factory supplies its own proven design, and the brand adds its logo, packaging and sometimes software. Our guide to OEM vs ODM EV chargers explains the difference in detail.

This is normal in electronics. What matters for the buyer is that the finished product is certified, the label is accurate and someone in their market stands behind the warranty.

Where EV Chargers Are Made

Chargers are produced in many countries. Many AC chargers, portable chargers and components are built in China, while some brands assemble in North America or Europe to meet local content rules or customer preference. For US public projects funded under the NEVI program, federal rules in 23 CFR Part 680 set requirements for the chargers used, so project owners should check those rules with their funding agency.

How to Check Who Made a Charger

  • Rating label. It often names the manufacturer or importer.
  • Safety listing. UL or ETL listings in the US name the company that holds the certificate. OSHA keeps the list of recognized testing labs.
  • FCC ID. Products with wireless features in the US carry an FCC ID linked to the applicant.
  • Manual and warranty card. Look for a company name and address responsible for support.

If you are a business sourcing chargers, read factory, trading company or marketplace seller before you place an order, and use an EV charger factory audit checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do automakers make their own chargers?

Some design them, but many automaker-branded home chargers are built by charger manufacturers under contract. Check the label or listing to see who holds the certificate.

Is a private-label charger lower quality?

Not necessarily. Quality depends on the factory, the design and testing, not on whose logo is printed on the case.

Who is responsible if a private-label charger fails?

Usually the brand or importer that sells it in your market. Ask before buying who handles warranty claims.
