On July 21, 2026, the Government of British Columbia announced that BC Hydro will expand its public fast-charging network to about 3,500 charging ports by 2035. The plan is one of the largest utility-led charging programs in Canada and sets higher power levels as the new standard for the network.
What Was Announced
- BC Hydro targets about 3,500 fast-charging ports by 2035.
- As of April 1, 2026, BC Hydro operated 917 ports at 190 locations.
- The expansion is backed by about $700 million in investment.
- $18 million in CleanBC Go Electric funding supports charging programs.
- New sites will use 200 kW chargers as standard, with 400 kW at some locations.
Where B.C. Stands Today
According to the province, British Columbia has more than 8,900 public charging ports, including 6,599 Level 2 ports and more than 2,300 fast-charging ports. That is an increase of 87% since 2023. The province has more than 238,000 zero-emission vehicles on the road.

What It Means for the Market
Utility investment in DC fast charging tends to raise demand for home and workplace charging too, because drivers gain confidence to switch to EVs. Level 2 still makes up the majority of public ports in B.C., and homes, condos and workplaces need Level 2 chargers with Canadian certification.
