Should I Charge My EV to 80% Every Night?

Many EV makers recommend a daily charge limit around 80–90% for some battery types, while LFP batteries may be charged to 100%. How to choose your limit.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

For many EVs, yes, or close to it. Several manufacturers recommend a daily limit of around 80–90% for batteries with nickel-based chemistries (NMC or NCA), and charging to 100% only before long trips. Cars with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are different: some makers recommend charging them to 100% regularly so the battery management system can estimate range accurately. Always follow your owner’s manual.

Why a Lower Daily Limit Helps Some Batteries

Lithium-ion cells with nickel-rich cathodes age a little faster when held at a very high state of charge, especially in heat. Keeping the daily level lower and charging to full only when needed reduces that stress. The effect accumulates slowly over years.

Typical Guidance by Battery Type

Battery chemistryCommon manufacturer guidance
NMC / NCA (nickel-based)About 80–90% daily; 100% before long trips
LFP (lithium iron phosphate)Often 100%, at least periodically

Your car’s app or manual tells you which applies.

Practical Tips

  • Set the limit in the car; the charger does not need to know it.
  • Plug in nightly rather than running low and doing big charges; frequent shallow charging is fine.
  • Before a road trip, charge to 100% shortly before leaving.
  • Avoid leaving the car at 100% or near 0% for days, especially in hot weather.

FuelEconomy.gov cites DOE estimates that EV batteries can last 12 to 15 years in moderate climates.

The charge limit is set in the car, so any home charger works with it. If you want to charge gently, an adjustable charger such as the EVDANCE EV-ACS4005T 40A NACS portable charger or the EVDANCE EV-AC04001U 40A J1772 portable charger lets you choose a lower current.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is charging to 100% bad?

Occasionally is fine. For nickel-based batteries, makers often suggest a lower daily limit.

Should LFP batteries be charged to 100%?

Many makers recommend it at least periodically. Check your manual.

Does the charger set the limit?

Usually the car does; set it in the car or its app.
