Is a NEMA 14-50 a Dryer Outlet? And Can You Convert a 10-30?

NEMA 14-50 is usually a range or RV outlet, not a dryer outlet. How to tell them apart and what converting an old 10-30 dryer outlet involves.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

Usually not. Most US dryer outlets are 30 A: NEMA 14-30 in newer homes and NEMA 10-30 in older ones. NEMA 14-50 is a 50 A outlet more often used for electric ranges and RV hookups. The difference matters for EV charging: a 14-50 on a 50 A circuit supports 40 A charging, while a 30 A dryer circuit supports only 24 A.

How to Tell Them Apart

Can You Convert a 10-30 to a 14-50?

Not by swapping the receptacle. A 10-30 circuit is wired for 30 A and has no separate equipment ground. Upgrading to a 14-50 needs wire rated for 50 A, a 50 A breaker, a separate ground and a neutral, and the panel must have capacity. In most homes this means a new circuit. An electrician may instead update the 10-30 to a 14-30 by adding a ground, which supports 24 A charging.

Charging From Each

  • 14-50: up to 40 A with chargers such as the EVDANCE EV-ACS4005T 40A NACS portable charger.
  • 14-30: up to 24 A with a charger approved for that plug or current.
  • 10-30: get an electrician’s assessment first because of the missing ground.
