Electric vehicle sales in Malaysia are growing much faster than its charging network, according to Kenanga Investment Bank research reported by Business Today Malaysia on September 21, 2026.
Key Figures
- 6,904 public charging bays as of July 2026: 4,665 AC and 2,239 DC.
- 8,833 battery-electric vehicles were registered in August 2026.
- January–August 2026 EV registrations reached 47,508, up 103% year on year.
- Full-year 2025 EV sales were 44,813 units, or 5.5% of the market.
- The Proton e.MAS 5 sold 4,770 units, 54% of August EV sales.
- The article cites a target of 30,000 charging points by 2030.
A Widening Gap
With EV sales more than doubling while the public network remains below 7,000 bays, Malaysia will need roughly four times its current public charging capacity to reach its 2030 target. Condominiums, offices and malls are likely to host much of the growth.

What It Means for Buyers
Shared and public charging in Malaysia requires an EVCS licence from the Energy Commission when electricity is supplied to others, and equipment must meet local requirements. See our Malaysia market page for details on licensing and Type 2 equipment.
