What Is EV Wireless Charging and How Does It Work?

Wireless (inductive) EV charging transfers power from a ground pad to a receiver under the car. How it works, standards, efficiency and why it is still rare.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

Wireless EV charging, also called inductive charging, transfers power from a pad on the ground to a receiver coil under the car through a magnetic field, so you park over the pad instead of plugging in. The SAE J2954 standard covers light-duty wireless charging in North America. It works, but it is still rare for private cars because few models support it, installation costs more than a wired charger, and parking alignment matters.

How It Works

  • The ground pad converts grid power into a high-frequency alternating magnetic field.
  • The vehicle’s receiver coil picks up the field and converts it back to electricity.
  • The car’s electronics manage the charging, as with a wired charger.
  • Alignment aids or automatic positioning help the car park over the pad.

For now, wired Level 2 remains the practical home choice; options include the EVDANCE EV-ACT5006T 48A Level 2 wall charger and EVDANCE EV-ACS4005T 40A NACS portable charger. See how home EV chargers work.
