Can I Get an EV Charger Installed for Free? Rebates and Programs

Some utilities, automakers and states cover part or all of home charger costs. Where to look, what the federal 30C credit covers and how to qualify.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

Sometimes. Free or heavily discounted home charger installation is usually offered by electric utilities, some state programs and some automakers as a purchase incentive. Most programs cover part of the cost rather than all of it, and many require a qualifying networked charger, a licensed electrician and enrolment in an off-peak or demand-response program.

Where Incentives Come From

SourceTypical offer
Electric utilityRebates on chargers or installation, off-peak EV rates, managed-charging payments
State or cityRebates, sometimes higher for income-qualified households
AutomakerCharger credit or installation package with a new EV
Federal tax credit (30C)See below

The Federal 30C Credit

The IRS Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit lists amounts for property placed in service from January 1, 2023, through June 30, 2026: for a main home, 30% of the cost up to $1,000 per item, in eligible low-income or non-urban census tracts. Equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026 does not appear to qualify under the IRS’s current guidance. Check the IRS page and a tax adviser for your situation.

How to Qualify for Utility Programs

  • Check your utility’s website before buying a charger; many require an approved model list.
  • Keep the receipt, permit and electrician invoice.
  • Expect to enrol in an EV rate or managed-charging program.

Charger Choice

If a program requires networked or ENERGY STAR chargers, confirm the model is on its list. Otherwise a plug-in charger like the EVDANCE EV-ACS4005T 40A NACS portable charger or hard-wired EVDANCE EV-ACT5006T 48A Level 2 wall charger works with any utility’s off-peak rate by scheduling in the car.
