Tethered and socketed (untethered) wallbox home chargers compared: convenience, flexibility, security, public use and which suits homes, fleets and car parks.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

In Type 2 markets such as Europe, the UK and Australia, wallboxes come in two versions. A tethered wallbox has a charging cable permanently attached. A socketed, or untethered, wallbox has a Type 2 socket, and the driver plugs in their own cable. The electronics inside are the same, but the daily experience is quite different.

When Tethered Makes Sense

For home charging and dedicated fleet bays, a tethered wallbox is usually the better choice. Drivers do not have to dig a cable out of the boot every evening, and the cable stays clean and dry on its holster. Choose a length that reaches the port whichever way the car is parked.

When Socketed Makes Sense

Socketed wallboxes suit shared and public sites where different drivers use different cable lengths, where a tidy appearance matters, or where a permanently attached cable could be damaged or stolen. Most public AC charging points in Europe are socketed for this reason, and drivers carry their own Mode 3 Type 2 cable.

What to Check Before Ordering

  • For socketed units, confirm whether the socket has safety shutters where local rules require them.
  • Check that the socket locks the cable during charging.
  • For tethered units, choose the cable length for the parking layout.
  • Confirm the connector type for your market: Type 2 in Europe and most of the world.
