Battery-electric cars took a record 29.8% share of the UK new car market in August 2026, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The figures, published on September 4, 2026, show private buyers driving growth ahead of September, traditionally one of the UK’s biggest months for new car registrations.
August in Numbers
- Total new car registrations reached 94,236, up 13.7% and the ninth consecutive month of growth.
- BEV registrations rose 27.7%, reaching a 29.8% share.
- Plug-in hybrids grew 39.8% to a 14.5% share.
- The year-to-date BEV share is 25.6%, a record but below the 33% headline target under the ZEV mandate.
- Private buyers grew 19.0% and fleets 10.1%.
SMMT’s Chief Executive Mike Hawes said that “September will be the acid test.”
Policy Uncertainty
According to EV Infrastructure News, the government is consulting on potentially lowering the 2030 target from 80% to as low as 50%, and ChargeUK described the growth of plug-in hybrids as a “major threat”. For charging businesses, that adds uncertainty to long-term planning even as sales grow.

What It Means for Buyers
Private buyers are the fastest-growing segment, and most will want home charging. In the UK that means a 7 kW single-phase charger on a dedicated circuit, compliant with the smart charge point regulations for private charge points. See our UK market page and our guide to 7kW portable EV chargers.
