Are EV Chargers Universal?

EV chargers are not all universal: connectors differ by region and between NACS and J1772. How compatibility works and how adapters bridge the gaps.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

Not fully, but close. In North America, AC chargers use either the NACS connector (SAE J3400), used by Tesla and many newer models, or J1772, used by most other EVs. The underlying charging signals are the same, so with the right adapter almost any car can use almost any Level 2 charger. DC fast chargers use NACS or CCS1, and adapters exist for those too. In Europe, Type 2 is the common AC standard.

How Adapters Help

  • NACS car at a J1772 station: a J1772-to-NACS adapter (often supplied with the car).
  • J1772 car at a NACS charger: a NACS-to-J1772 adapter, such as the EVDANCE JT02 NACS-to-J1772 adapter.
  • CCS1 car at a NACS DC fast charger: a NACS-to-CCS1 DC adapter approved for your car, such as the EVDANCE JT08 NACS-to-CCS1 adapter; check your automaker’s approved list.

Use certified adapters rated for the full current, and follow your car maker’s guidance.

Choosing a Home Charger for Future Cars

Buy the connector your current car uses and keep an adapter for visitors or your next car. Chargers in both styles are available, for example the EVDANCE EV-ACS4005T 40A NACS portable charger for NACS and the EVDANCE EV-AC04001U 40A J1772 portable charger for J1772.

Is NACS replacing J1772?

Many automakers are moving to NACS ports, but J1772 will remain common for years.

Are adapters safe?

Certified adapters rated for the charging current are safe when used as the automaker recommends.
