Why Does My EV Charger Keep Tripping the Breaker?

An EV charger that trips its breaker or GFCI is overloaded, wired incorrectly or detecting leakage. How to tell which and fix it safely.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

An EV charger that keeps tripping the breaker usually has one of four problems: the charger’s current is set too high for the circuit, another load shares the circuit, a GFCI breaker is reacting to the charger’s own ground-fault protection or to small leakage, or there is a wiring fault or worn component. Overload trips tend to happen after some time; ground-fault trips often happen immediately when charging starts.

Current and Breaker Must Match

EV charging is a continuous load, so the charger’s current must be no more than 80% of the breaker: 32 A on 40 A, 40 A on 50 A, 48 A on 60 A. See what size breaker do I need.

GFCI Nuisance Trips

Under current code, plug-in chargers in garages are often on GFCI-protected receptacles, which can interact with the charger’s own protection. See does an EV charger need GFCI.

Stop and Call an Electrician If

  • The outlet, plug or breaker feels hot or smells burnt.
  • The breaker trips even at low current.
  • You see scorch marks or melted plastic.

Adjustable chargers such as the EVDANCE EV-ACS4005T 40A NACS portable charger (16–40 A) and EVDANCE EV-ACS3210T 32A NACS portable charger (10–32 A) make it easy to match the circuit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my EV charger trip the GFCI?

Sensitivity interaction with the charger’s built-in protection, moisture or leakage.

Can I just install a bigger breaker?

No. The breaker must match the wire; upsizing it without new wire is a fire hazard.

Why does my charger trip the main breaker?

The whole home is over capacity; load management or an upgrade is needed.
