Should EV Chargers Have Surge Protection?

Surge protection helps protect EV charger electronics, and recent NEC editions require a surge protective device for dwelling services. Where to put it and what it covers.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

It is a good idea, and in many US homes it is now required at the service. Beginning with the 2020 edition, the National Electrical Code requires a surge protective device (SPD) for dwelling unit services, so new services and many service replacements include one. A whole-home SPD at the panel protects the charger along with other electronics. Some installers add a second device near the charger on long runs or in lightning-prone areas.

Where Surge Protection Goes

LocationWhat it protects
Service or main panel (Type 1 or Type 2 SPD)Whole home, including the EV circuit
Subpanel or near chargerExtra protection on long runs
Built into chargerSome chargers include internal surge components

What Surges Can Do

  • Damage control boards, communication modules and relays.
  • Cause intermittent faults after storms.
  • Damage the car’s on-board charger if it is connected during a strike nearby (rare).

Other Good Practice

  • Proper earthing and bonding.
  • Unplug portable chargers during severe lightning if practical.
  • Keep firmware and insurance details up to date.

EVDANCE chargers such as the EVDANCE EV-ACT5006T 48A Level 2 wall charger and EVDANCE EV-AC03201T dual-gun AC charging station include protection against over-voltage and ground faults; a panel SPD adds protection against larger external surges.
