What Is an EV Mobile Charger?

An EV mobile charger usually means one of two things. Most often it is a portable charger: a charging cable with a built-in control box that plugs into a wall outlet and travels with the car.

An EV mobile charger usually means one of two things. Most often it is a portable charger: a charging cable with a built-in control box that plugs into a wall outlet and travels with the car. It can also mean a mobile charging service, where a van or battery unit drives to a stranded EV and adds enough charge to reach a station.

How a Portable Mobile Charger Works

A portable charger does not hold energy. It is supply equipment that safely connects your car to an outlet. The control box checks the ground, monitors current and stops power if it detects a fault. The car’s onboard charger then converts AC to DC for the battery.

Speed depends on the outlet. On a standard 120 V outlet you get Level 1 charging, about 1 kW or 2–5 miles of range per hour according to the U.S. DOT. On a 240 V outlet such as a NEMA 14-50, a portable charger can deliver Level 2 speeds, which the DOT puts at 10–20 miles per hour. Our guide do portable EV chargers work explains how the outlet limits speed.

Portable chargers suit drivers who:

  • Rent and cannot install a wall charger.
  • Travel to places with 240 V outlets, such as RV parks or family homes.
  • Want a backup in case a wallbox fails.
  • Split time between two homes.

How Mobile Charging Services Work

A mobile charging service sends a vehicle carrying a battery or generator to an EV that has run out of charge. It is a roadside solution, not a daily charging method. The added range is limited, and availability depends on your area and your roadside plan. AAA has studied mobile EV charging for roadside assistance; see our article does AAA have portable EV chargers for what to expect.

Small consumer power banks are not a practical substitute. An EV battery is far larger than any power bank you can carry, as explained in can you charge an EV with a portable battery.

Choosing a Portable Charger

  • Connector: NACS, J1772 or Type 2, matching your car and market.
  • Plug: NEMA 14-50 in North America; domestic or CEE plugs elsewhere.
  • Adjustable current: lets you match the outlet’s rating.
  • IP rating: IP66 for outdoor use.
  • Safety listing: from a recognized testing lab.

EVDANCE options include the EV-ACS4005T 40A NACS portable charger (9.6 kW, 16/24/32/40 A), the EV-ACS3210E 32A Type 2 portable charger (about 7 kW single-phase) and the ACS1605PE 11 kW three-phase portable charger. All are IP66 rated. Never use an extension cord, and have a licensed electrician check any outlet you rely on regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a mobile charger the same as a portable charger?

Usually, yes. Most people searching for a mobile charger mean a portable charging cable. Mobile charging services are a separate roadside option.

Can a portable charger charge my EV with no outlet?

No. It needs a suitable outlet. It does not store energy.

How fast is a mobile charging service?

It varies by provider and equipment. Expect enough range to reach a charger, not a full battery.
