Is There a Portable EV Charger? What It Is and What It Is Not

Yes, portable EV chargers exist, but most are charging cables that plug into a wall outlet, not batteries. Here is what they are, how fast they charge and who needs one.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

Yes. Portable EV chargers exist and are widely sold, but most of them are not what people first imagine. A portable EV charger is a charging cable with a built-in control box that plugs into an ordinary wall outlet at one end and into your car at the other. It does not store energy. It takes power from the outlet, checks that the connection is safe, and passes the power to your car’s on-board charger.

The battery-powered “power bank for cars” that many people search for is a different and much rarer product. We explain why in can you charge an EV with a portable battery.

What a Portable EV Charger Actually Is

Technically, a portable charger is known as a cord-and-plug connected EV supply equipment, or in Europe a Mode 2 charging cable. It has three parts:

  • A grid plug that fits a household or industrial outlet, such as a NEMA 5-15 (120 V), NEMA 14-50 (240 V), a Schuko or a CEE plug.
  • A control box with protection electronics: ground fault detection, over-temperature and over-current protection, and often a display and current selector.
  • A vehicle connector: NACS (SAE J3400), J1772 or Type 2, depending on the car and the market.

Most cars used to come with a basic 120-volt portable cord. Many automakers no longer include one, which is one reason searches for portable chargers have grown.

How Fast Does a Portable EV Charger Charge?

OutletTypical powerRange added per hour (approx.)
120 V household outlet (Level 1)1.4–1.9 kW3–5 miles
240 V dryer outlet, NEMA 14-30up to 5.8 kW (24 A)15–20 miles
240 V NEMA 14-50up to 9.6 kW (40 A)25–35 miles
400 V three-phase CEE 32 A (Europe)up to 22 kWlimited by the car’s on-board charger

Your car’s on-board charger also sets a limit. A car that accepts 7.7 kW will not charge faster on a 9.6 kW charger. Our article on charging time at 7, 11 and 22 kW shows how this works.

Who Needs a Portable EV Charger?

  • Renters and people who move often, because nothing is hard-wired to the building.
  • Drivers who travel to family homes, cabins or RV parks with a NEMA 14-50 outlet.
  • Homes with an existing 240 V outlet in the garage, where a portable unit can do the job of a wall charger.
  • Backup for when a public charger or home wallbox is out of service.

It is not a roadside rescue device. If your battery is empty on the highway, a portable charger only helps when there is a suitable outlet nearby.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do portable EV chargers have a battery?

Almost all do not. They are smart charging cables that draw power from a wall outlet. Battery-based units exist but store only a few miles of range.

Can I use a portable EV charger every day?

Yes. Plugged into a suitable, dedicated outlet, a portable charger can be your everyday home charger.

Is a portable EV charger the same as Level 1?

A 120 V portable charger is Level 1. A 240 V portable charger is Level 2 and charges several times faster.

Key Takeaways

  • Portable EV chargers exist and are mostly smart cables, not batteries.
  • Charging speed depends on the outlet: 3–5 miles per hour at 120 V, up to 25–35 miles per hour on a NEMA 14-50.
  • They suit renters, travellers and homes with an existing 240 V outlet.
  • They are not a roadside rescue tool without a nearby outlet.
