How Long Do Home EV Chargers Last?

A quality home EV charger can be expected to last many years. What wears out first, how warranties compare, and how to extend its life.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

A quality home EV charger can be expected to last ten years or more with normal use, and many manufacturers offer warranties of around three years. The electronics in the box usually outlast the parts you handle: the cable, the connector latch and, for portable chargers, the wall plug and outlet. Heat, sunlight and physical damage shorten life more than the number of charging sessions.

Warranty and Support

Check the warranty length, whether it covers labour, and whether the cable can be replaced without replacing the whole unit. Chargers that receive firmware updates also stay compatible with new vehicles longer.

Extending Charger Life

  • Install out of direct afternoon sun where possible; see hot-climate charging.
  • Inspect the cable and connector every few months for cuts, cracks or discolouration.
  • Keep the connector in its holster, not on the ground.
  • Replace any outlet that feels warm or shows scorch marks.
