What Size EV Charger Can I Have at Home? Panel Capacity Explained

The size of EV charger your home can take depends on your electrical panel’s spare capacity. How load calculations work and what to do if capacity is tight.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

It depends on your electrical service and how much of it you already use. Many homes with a 200 A service can add a 40–60 A EV circuit comfortably. Homes with 100 A service often can too, but may need a smaller charger, load management or a service upgrade. An electrician decides this with a load calculation under the National Electrical Code, not by looking at the number of empty breaker slots.

Typical Outcomes by Service Size

Home serviceCommon outcome
200 A, gas heating40–60 A EV circuit usually fits
200 A, all-electric with heat pumpOften fits; check calculation
100 A, gas heating24–40 A circuit may fit, or use load management
100 A, all-electricLoad management or service upgrade often needed

These are general patterns, not a substitute for a calculation of your home.

How a Load Calculation Works

The electrician adds up your home’s existing loads, including heating, cooking, water heater, dryer and air conditioning, using code factors, then adds the EV charger at full rating. If the total exceeds your service rating, a smaller charger or load management is needed. Our article on load calculation basics explains the method for buildings.

If Capacity Is Tight

  • Choose a lower current. A 24 A charger still adds about 18 miles per hour.
  • Use load management that reduces charging when other loads are high; see dynamic load balancing.
  • Use an EV energy management device or circuit sharing between dryer and charger, where code allows.
  • Upgrade the service if you plan more electric appliances.

Flexible Options

Adjustable chargers let you match the panel: the EVDANCE EV-ACS3210T 32A NACS portable charger runs from 10 A to 32 A and the EVDANCE EV-ACS4005T 40A NACS portable charger from 16 A to 40 A.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install an EV charger with a 100 A panel?

Often yes, at a lower current or with load management, after a load calculation.

What size EV charger do I need?

Most drivers are well served by 32–40 A; match your car and panel.

Do empty breaker slots mean I have capacity?

No. Capacity depends on the total load, not on free slots.
