FOB vs DDP: How to Import EV Chargers From China Without Surprises

Injection molding machines on the EVDANCE factory production floor
FOB vs DDP explained for EV charger importers: who pays freight, insurance and duties, the risks of each term, and how to choose for your first order.

EVDANCE Insights · EV Charging Guides

The price on an EV charger quotation means little until you know the shipping term behind it. Two quotes of the same amount can differ by a large share of the landed cost depending on whether freight, insurance, duties and delivery are included. For most first-time importers, the choice comes down to FOB or DDP.

FOB and DDP in Plain Terms

Both are Incoterms rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce.

When FOB Makes Sense

FOB gives you control. If you already import regularly, have a forwarder you trust and consolidate goods from several suppliers, FOB usually gives the lowest total cost and full visibility of freight and duties. You also choose the insurance cover.

When DDP Makes Sense

DDP gives you simplicity. The seller quotes one price to your door and handles freight, clearance and duties. It suits first orders, samples, e-commerce sellers shipping to a warehouse, and buyers in markets where import procedures are complex. Ask the seller to confirm exactly what the DDP price includes, such as delivery to a ground-floor address or a fulfilment centre.

Documents to Ask For Either Way

  • Commercial invoice and packing list
  • Certificates and test reports for your market
  • Bill of lading or air waybill
  • Certificate of origin, if your market requires one
  • Any market-specific conformity documents, such as pre-export verification certificates

How EVDANCE Quotes
