India’s public charging network has grown roughly six-fold since 2022, according to data reported by Business Standard on September 1, 2026. But low utilisation and slow rollout of subsidised chargers show how much work remains.
Network Figures
- 29,151 public charging stations as of December 2025, up from about 5,000 in 2022.
- 67,657 chargers as of August 7, 2026, operated by more than 200 charge point operators.
- 73% of chargers (48,709 of 66,518, excluding battery swapping) are rated below 30 kW.
- Karnataka accounts for 21% of chargers, followed by Maharashtra (14%), Uttar Pradesh (8%), Delhi (7%) and Tamil Nadu (6%).
- Utilisation is only “1–5 per cent,” according to Tushar Bhaskar of Rubix Data Sciences.
PM E-DRIVE Chargers Await Installation
In a related report on August 4, 2026, Business Standard reported that 6,562 public chargers have been approved under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, with ₹2,000 crore allocated for public charging. Minister HD Kumaraswamy told Parliament that “none of these chargers have been installed yet.”

What It Means for Buyers
Most of India’s market is low-power AC and small DC charging, and a large backlog of subsidised chargers still has to be supplied and installed. For suppliers, compliance with Indian EV supply equipment standards is the first step. Our India market page covers Type 2 and CCS2 charging and the IS 17017 series.
